I spent some time this weekend with Stuart at his farm in Mississippi. We cleared out some brush from the road for the goats to eat - they cleared off the sumac boughs by days end. The young goats still need supplemental nutrition from milk, which we mixed and fed using a small bucket with nipples attached to it!
The lady goats are all expecting kids soon. The one below with the brown chest can hardly get up once she is down. We spent some time with them, trimming hooves, deworming, defungi-fying, giving B-complex supplements.
One kid whispering sweet nothings to the other young kid.
We tilled plots, dug 9 holes in the clay-sediment soil and planted lots of moon-glow pears, granny smith and macintosh apple trees. Hopefully in 2 years they will be established and full of fruit! There was some talk of civil disobedience with cider in a dry county...
One of the most fascinating things to do is watch the chickens. They are hilarious. I hope to get better pictures of the roosters, hens and chicks next time. The growing chicks get up on the billy goat's back and he tolerates it as though they are his closest buddies and he's just helping out friends.
Dusk is beautiful. There were storm clouds in the distance that put on a fabulous light show from dusk until early morning, when they finally rolled through and watered the newly planted trees.
