Yesterday we really pushed the driving, arriving very late in Oklahoma City. The front desk attendant informed us that the only room available with two double beds was a smoking room. "Do people really smoke in these rooms?", I ask. "Oh honey, of course they do. This is Oklahoma". She felt such pity on us that she gave us each our own non-smoking room with a king bed. God bless her! "Would you like a wakeup call, ya'll?". "Absolutely not", we replied.
After the flattest 3-mile morning jog around the local neighborhood, we continued west on I-40 to Amarillo, TX. Today was a lower mileage day, and we enjoyed it very much.
For lunch, Urban Spoon guided us to 575 Pizzeria in Amarillo. It was a fabulous place with fresh ingredients in their hand-tossed creations that were not at all greasy. An unexpected gem in Texas. The waiter welcomed us strangers from Virginie, and told us of his plans to become a high school football coach. Ok, some things are just like the stereotype.
We drove on to Albuquerque, NM, where will stay tonight.
A friend of Kiril's suggested we try Frontier Restaurant for dinner in Albuquerque, which was very much like a New Mexican version of the Flying Fish, but with burritos. It was right across from the university!
We then headed to Twin Peaks, a bar some colleagues had taken me to during a previous trip to Sandia NL. Time for ice cold barley soda. The waitresses and bartenders showered us with attention, and Kiril grinned from ear-to-ear for a good two hours. We had awesome conversation, and made promises to keep in touch and got all mooshy sentimental as good friends do when moves take you 3k miles apart. What a great way to end the evening.
Our trip tomorrow will take us to the Grand Canyon and down to Lake Havasu to see the Reese's and our college friend Jacob, who will be coming up from Tucson. It's a long driving day, so we will be up with the chickens to make it happen.
